Owen Barton, a passer-by who captured the footage, has praised the actions of the tanker driver.
He said: "His actions were on point. He saved himself and possibly other people as well.
"He noticed something was wrong and pulled over quickly and made sure it was safe.
"Police at the scene said it was carrying salt water so luckily nothing toxic."
The road was shut in both directions for a number of hours during the incident but later reopened by 9pm.
