A foodbank charity will be constructing a tin pyramid at an upcoming town festival.

Mid Norfolk Foodbank, partnering with Morrisons in Dereham, is set to build the impressive display at Dereham Day on May 11.

They hope the pyramid will draw attention to and rally support for their cause, after hitting an unwanted milestone this year of giving away more than 5,000 food parcels, with 2,300 going to children.

Suzanne Bushby, the foodbank's operations manager said: “We are seeing a much higher uptake of families needing emergency food aid, especially during the school holidays.

“This is obviously having an impact on our stock levels, so we are very grateful for every single donation of food.

“We have given out a record 5,443 parcels in the past year – that’s 3,000 more than a decade ago."

The charity's centres in Dereham, Swaffham and Fakenham dispensed 47 tonnes of food and toiletries last year due to 1,988 food parcel requests.

Persons struggling with the essentials are urged to visit the foodbank's website midnorfolk.foodbank.org.uk, for food donation and financial aid instructions.
