An accountant-turned-health coach has shared the story of her rapid life switch-up.

Nikki Spencer, from Whinburgh near Dereham, worked in finance for more than 15 years but during lockdown realised she was "at burn out" and struggling with several ailments.

This inspired her to retrain in naturopathy and nutritional therapy and launch her business, The Root Cause.

Naturopathy is the practice of using natural remedies such as herbs, exercise, diet and lifestyle plans and nutritional counselling to help the body heal from traumas that manifest as health problems.

Ms Spencer treats clients struggling with conditions such as acne, PCOS, gut health, fatigue and hormonal imbalances by creating personalised plans to combat "the root cause" of their issues rather than "putting a plaster on the symptoms".

"After spending years as a corporate accountant in a busy, competitive environment, I felt my life was very stressful," she said.

"I had zero tolerance for anything that slightly irked me, was working long hours but not being productive and was doing a half job at work and a half job at home as a mum.

"My health and wellbeing were suffering - I was experiencing chronic back pain and crippling daily headaches that stopped me from enjoying day-to-day life."

She found the world of health information "overwhelming" which drove her on her search for more natural remedies.

Once she realised a difference in herself, she qualified as a health coach and naturopathic nutritional therapist and opened a tranquil clinic in the Norfolk countryside to help others with their own journeys.

"This was not an easy decision after training to be an accountant for five years, working in the same firm for 15 years and earning a decent wage.

"But it was driven by a desire to find a more balanced, healthy way of living and to help others do the same."

Ms Spencer works with each client for at least six weeks and gets to know everyone on a deep level to make sure their plan is right for them.

"Health concerns can take years to manifest and unpicking them isn’t always a quick fix," she said.

"If a client has a specific requirement and would like a bespoke package, I can certainly accommodate that as every person is an individual and no two people are the same."
