A group is working to put a mid Norfolk town on the map with plans to install a tourist sign along the A47.

AboutDereham, a collection of organisations working to promote Dereham, will be applying for a brown sign to be put on the A road to increase the numbers of visitors to the town.

Mike Webb, treasurer for aboutDereham, said that he first enquired about the idea with National Highways two years ago.

He said: "More recently, we've been in the process of talking to National Highways about the sign's information but I just think it's a great idea to show drivers that Dereham is worth a visit.

"At the moment, there isn't much out on the roads that lets people know about Dereham and with plans in place to rejuvenate the town centre, it seems logical.

The sign forms part of the wider delivery plan to revamp Dereham and its town centre.

In 2020, the Dereham Town Delivery Plan was unveiled to strengthen the local economy and transform the town by 2031.

So far, the work has involved revamped bicycle parking, more pedestrian signs, an upgrade at Queen Mother's Garden, installation of public art, and opening the Ellenor Fenn Memorial Garden.

Mr Webb said that there was little point in transforming the town if no one else knows about it.

He said; "We initially wanted a sign with the town's biggest attractions on it, which would include the windmill, the football club, the leisure centre and the Mid-Norfolk railway.

"Unfortunately, National Highways said those wouldn't be viable, but we could have one that just said 'Historical Market Town'.

"It's a shame but it's not the end of the world. We just want people doing down the A47 to know about Dereham."

He will soon be signing off the application and submitting it to National Highways.
