A man passionate about animals is keen to ensure they never miss an appointment by starting his own pet transport service.

Steve Hitchman, 52, found a niche in Dereham's market for those who are not always able to get their pets to their vets or other appointments.

The idea for Petz Transport started when a friend of Mr Hitchman broke his leg and was unable to drive his dog from Dereham to an out-of-hours vet in Taverham.

Then, three months later, a woman with MS needed assistance to take her poorly dog to the vets as well.

Mr Hitchman said: "The lady rang me around 9am and I was there by about 9.45am.

"When we were waiting, I gave her a call so she could talk to the vet and know about what was happening.

"Full communication is important because the owners can't come with us for insurance purposes.

"But we had Ollie back home, munching on a treat, by 11.30am."

The business is fully insured, DEFRA-registered and has a veterinary nurse as part of the team.

Prior to starting his new venture, Mr Hitchman spent 11 years working for local government and more than two years as a dog warden.

He said: "I've always worked in the community and I wanted to keep working with animals, which is my passion.

"So if it breathes, Petz Transport will look after it."

The business also does more than transport pets to and from appointments.

Mr Hitchman will also pop in to look after pets when the owners are away.

He said: "I'll liaise with clients to meet them and their pet beforehand.

"We'll then arrange the best way to access their home and then I'll come in as scheduled and let the pet outside and make sure it gets some exercise.

"Our service is tailored to be lovely, nice and gentle to the pet - they're our priority."

Although the business does not officially open until September 16, Mr Hitchman said the phone line is open and customers can contact him on 01362 700378.
